Anal Play 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Backdoor Pleasure

Yay for the booty! Anal play has been gaining popularity as more people discover its incredible potential. Including anal play into your sex life can really up the ante in terms of pleasure. Whether you're curious, a total newbie, or just looking for the best way to get started, this guide will walk you through the basics of why people enjoy anal play, how to explore it safely, what to expect, and the best beginner-friendly toys to enhance your experience.

What is anal play?

Anal play refers to any kind of sexual stimulation involving the anus (aka the butthole). This can include external stimulation (like touching, rimming, or using a vibrator), internal stimulation (such as fingering, butt plugs, anal beads, or penetration with a penis or dildo), and prostate massage for those with a prostate.

Why People Enjoy Anal Play

The anus is jam packed with nerve endings, making it a highly sensitive erogenous zone for people of all genders. For those with a prostate, anal stimulation can lead to deep, full-body orgasms. Even without a prostate, anal play can add a new dimension to pleasure, whether as the main event or as an addition to other forms of stimulation. Plus, trying something new can be an exciting and fun way to connect with yourself or a partner!

Let’s Talk About Poop

It’s totally normal to be worried about poop. Here’s the deal: as long as you don’t actively have to go to the bathroom, maintain a healthy diet and have cleaned the area before play, you should be totally fine. Your rectum is usually pretty free of poop. Poop lives further up in your colon and only moves to rectum when it is time to go to the bathroom. There may be some residual poop in your rectum that could make itself know during play. Please know that this is perfectly normal and doesn’t mean that you are dirty or gross. Poop can happen no matter how much effort you put into preparing. No big deal. It comes with the territory.

How to Prepare for Anal Sex

Physically Preparing

  • ·       Eat a healthy, fiber-rich diet and stay hydrated. Fiber makes your poo lump together. So, a healthy diet fiber filled diet will make for less residual poop in your rectum ultimately leading to a cleaner experience. Staying hydrated will ensure that you have regular bowel movements.
  • ·       Avoid big meals before play. Generally, it’s a good idea to avoid putting additional stress on your digestive system before anal play. This includes considering the foods you eat beforehand. Make sure to avoid any foods that cause you a stomach upset (diary, greasy foods, etc).
  • Go to the bathroom. You’ll want to make sure you go to the bathroom at least 30 minutes to an hour before play.
  • ·       Clean inside (if you want). To be clear, this step isn’t necessary. But if you do want to include the use of an enema in your preparation, here is how to do it. We suggest using a bulb enema an hour to two hours before play. The reason for doing this step so early is to ensure that all of the water has had a chance to exit your body before the fun begins. The use of a bulb enema is preferred because you don’t want to force water up too far into your colon. Note: you are only trying to clean the last 6-8 inches of your rectum. Trying to clean any further up can stimulate your digestive system and create a messy situation. Make sure to use lukewarm water and lubricate the tip of the enema bulb before inserting. Squeeze the bulb and hold the water inside for 10-15 seconds and then release. Do this until the water comes out clear. Clean your enema with warm water and soap. To avoid any risks associated with enema use, make sure not to use an enema more than a few times a week max and never use too much force.
  • Wash outside. Wash your butthole and the surrounding area before play. The rectum is typically empty, so full-on cleaning isn’t necessary for casual play. A warm shower and external cleansing with mild soap should do the trick.

Mentally Prepping: Relax and Communicate

  • If you're exploring anal play with a partner, using open and honest communication is key. Discuss what you want to explore, what you are excited about and any concerns or hesitations you might have before starting.
  • If you're solo, plan to go slowly and take time to listen to your body.
  • Anxiety and tension can make any new experience feel uncomfortable; this is no exception. Creating a comfortable, pressure-free, judgement-free environment is essential. When the butt is involved, things can happen. Talk about potential embarrassments and have a solution in place before you begin play (ex. having unscented baby wipes on standby).

Lube, Lube and More Lube!

  • The anus doesn’t self-lubricate, so a good-quality lube is non-negotiable.
  • Water-based lube is great for all types of toys and condoms but can dry out quickly. Fortunately, there are water-based lubes designed with anal sex in mind that have more staying power.
  • Silicone-based lube is a great option because it lasts longer and is ideal for longer play sessions. But, you’ll want to avoid using it with silicone toys.
  • Oil-based lube is another great option because of its staying power and skin nourishing properties, but it isn’t compatible with latex condoms.

Set The Scene

·       Lay down a towel to collect any lube, body fluids, or additional messiness that might occur.

·       Have unscented baby wipes on standby for quick cleanup.

Consider Barriers

·       Using gloves during anal play is a great way to keep your hands clean during anal play and relieve some pressure if poo does make an appearance. Just change out the soiled gloves and carry on. Make sure to use nitrile gloves if you or your partner have a latex allergy.

·       Condoms are great thing to incorporate during anal play for the same reason gloves are. They can make for fuss free clean up should any mess arise. Not to mention protection from STI’s. Also, condoms can also be used on dildos and other insertables.

How To Start: Small and Slow

  • Begin with external stimulation of the butthole—light touches, massaging, gentle circular motions, or rimming can help build comfort and excitment.
  • If inserting anything, start with a well-lubed finger or a small, beginner-friendly toy (see our recommendations below).
  • Go slow, listen to your body, and never force anything.

Experiment with Different Sensations

  • Once you’re comfortable, try gentle thrusting, pulsing, or vibrating sensations.
  • Engaging in partnered play? Communicate what feels best as you go.

What to Expect During Anal Play

  • New Sensations: The feeling may be unfamiliar at first, but with time, it can become pleasurable and exciting.
  • Gradual Comfort: The more relaxed and patient you are, the more enjoyable the experience. Don’t rush the process! Let your body adjust to the new sensations and progress only when you feel ready.
  • Prostate Pleasure: If you have a prostate, you may experience deep, satisfying orgasms from internal stimulation of the prostate or P-spot.
  • The Need for More Lube: Seriously, you can never use too much lube!
